Character Background

• History: Wiki
• Core Relationships:

Satoru Gojo

Suguru's classmate/partner/best friend, who, thanks to his combination of abilities, is considered to be the strongest sorcerer of his generation—but who Suguru sees as a person first and foremost? Who Suguru feels strangely responsible for, because before Suguru came into his life, Satoru was a friendless loner with no moral compass and a seriously bad attitude. They're still working on the latter; like, Satoru is still unapologetically obnoxious, but as Suguru understands him in a way that few others do, Suguru gives him a pass.

(Most of the time.)

Despite their closeness, however—the ease with which they work together—this duo is currently in the process of becoming two solo acts, thanks to both Satoru's evolving skills and Suguru's inability to open up about his myriad of problems/concerns. It isn't overtly obvious? Suguru still sees Satoru as his closest friend; he's still doing things like, say, asking for sweet treats to share, simply because he knows that Satoru is fond of them—but even with their friendly bickering and banter, Suguru still feels as though he's being left behind, if not outright forgotten about.

Shoko Ieiri

The unfortunate classmate of both Suguru and Satoru, Shoko is, without a doubt, someone that Suguru considers a close friend. She's the calm, quiet member of the trio? Someone who rarely accompanies them on missions, given her talent with healing over fighting, but they spend time together both in and outside of class. Suguru bums smokes from her, from time to time; Suguru and Shoko team up to tease Satoru, or Shoko and Satoru team up to tease Suguru, or all three team up to tease someone else. Shoko is a spot of normalcy in the sprint that is sorcery, and Suguru appreciates—treasures!—her for it.

Yu Haibara

A friendly, talkative underclassman, Yu both looked up to and wanted to impress Suguru—which Suguru handled with good-natured grace. Talking with him was never a chore, despite his excitable nature; Suguru saw him as a good person, a promising sorcerer, and made himself available for Yu whenever possible.

Unfortunately, however, serving as a sorcerer is extremely dangerous—and Yu recently lost his life to an errant curse, which has greatly affected Suguru. He's yet to fully work through it; the vision of Yu's mangled corpse in the school morgue haunts Suguru day in and day out, making him wonder why someone as genuinely good as Yu had to die for people who will never recognize his sacrifice.

Riko Amanai

As a Star Plasma Vessel, Riko, a fourteen-year-old girl, was expected to "merge" with a powerful being known as Tengen in order to ensure the continued protection of sorcerer society. Suguru was tasked with protecting her and delivering her to Tengen—which, of course, went awry, both because of the great deal of assassins sent after her and his own misgivings regarding the mission as a whole. Riko was spirited and spunky; Suguru, seeing her as a person as opposed to a tool, offered to help her run away as opposed to sacrifice herself—

—and then, just as he offered her his hand, Riko was assassinated.

Obviously this affected Suguru deeply; Riko's death made him not only question the ethics of the higher-ups, but also sorcerer society as a whole. He regrets her death; he's angered by the factors leading to it; he laments that someone as fun, as real, as Riko was not allowed to live a full life, which are all things that continue to turn about in his mind...

Character Personality Through Key Moments

(2+) Positive Experiences:

Empathetic

On paper, Suguru is the person you want on your team—because Suguru will serve as the glue binding everyone together? The reason that everything runs smoothly. It's easy for him to put himself in others' shoes; he'd much rather attempt to understand even the most aggravating individual than fall back on anger, or annoyance, or anything of the sort, which means there are very few people that he doesn't get along with—and that he's the perfect person for diffusing even the most explosive situations. Put him in a room with two arguing people and watch all three of them walk out an hour or so later, laughing and shaking hands...

...Or, you know. Make him work with someone as immature, as bratty, as Satoru Gojo, because that is honestly the best example of Suguru's empathy in action. Satoru is... complex! Someone who, at one point, made a hobby of being as unlikable as possible—but Suguru saw past that act? Patiently dealt with the obnoxious behavior that pushed so many others away, because at the end of the day, Suguru saw what so many others couldn't or wouldn't: loneliness. Satoru, heralded as the most powerful sorcerer in generations, was viewed as more of a weapon than a person; his childish antics were a way of lashing out, of being seen, and thus Suguru was the first person to a) push past them and b) offer genuine friendship.

True to Himself

If you need something done, Suguru is the one to ask. He takes even the smallest tasks seriously, though not to an annoying degree; he isn't an anal-retentive perfectionist, but he is a responsible, trustworthy individual who will do all that he can to ensure success—if what he is asked to do does not conflict with his personal standards, because Suguru's moral compass dictates so much of what he does/how he does it? He sees the world in a very black-and-white way, which is a boon, in some ways; like, the strength of his beliefs leads others (namely Satoru) to look to him for guidance, but it also leads to Suguru constantly navigating this very, very thin grey line as he works to determine where the true boundaries lie. It can be tricky to follow your heart, especially when it involves going against the grain!

But once Suguru chooses a path, he commits to it—as seen with Riko. Known as a Star Plasma Vessel, Riko, a teenaged girl Suguru was tasked to protect, was meant to sacrifice her life for the betterment of sorcerer society; surrendering her consciousness via merging with a barrier-keeping entity would ensure the status quo—and yet Suguru still offers to help Riko escape? To allow her to choose her own fate, because Suguru, along with Satoru, would rather rework society as a whole than march some fourteen-year-old girl to her death.

(2+) Negative Experiences:

Caring

"Wait," you say. "Isn't it good to care?"

Yes! Of course it is—to a point. The problem with Suguru, however—which relates back to his empathetic nature—is his tendency to care so deeply that it becomes detrimental to both his mental and physical well-being. Suguru is incapable of drawing lines between himself and the world at large? Others' pain becomes his pain—which is less than ideal considering his profession. As a sorcerer, Suguru spends his days exorcising curses that hurt and/or kill humans; he is surrounded by suffering day in and day out, which means that Suguru never has the opportunity to take a step back and simply breathe. Seeing the absolute worst of everything is taxing, to say the least! It truly takes a toll...

...Which, in turn, leads to Suguru questioning the system he's struggling to uphold.

It all came to a head after the death of Riko, a girl that was integral to the structure of sorcerer society—and that Suguru and Satoru were tasked to protect. Her assassination forced Suguru to take a step back, to look at the world as a whole, because he always understood that sorcerers existed to protect non-sorcerers? To work in the shadows. Why, though? Why work to protect people who have no idea of your existence? Why put your life on the line for people who will never understand your sacrifice? How is it fair?

He's yet to answer these questions, though he's working through them as best he can—and coming to some truly troubling revelations in the process, but! It all boils down to Suguru once again caring far too much? Suguru forgetting to put himself first as he thinks of the friends/sorcerers he's lost/will lose in the coming weeks, months, years.

Internalization

Suguru is seen as a friendly, approachable guy? The perfect person to vent to—but Suguru will never return the favor, because Suguru is the type to bottle everything up and bury it deep, deep within himself. He doesn't want to be a burden; his problems, as he sees them, are his problems, and thus they are his responsibility to solve. This is obviously a very unhealthy mindset! Especially given the scope of his aforementioned problems and his tendency to shoulder others' burdens, because a person can only handle so much at one time. The pressure is mounting...

...Well, the pressure has been mounting! For some time, actually—which is why, in the months following Riko's death, we see Suguru pulling farther away than ever before. All his frustrations, his worries, his pain—Suguru holds them close, choosing to say nothing at all even to Satoru, his best friend. It's business as usual, so far as others are concerned. Suguru loses weight, which Satoru actually comments on; Suguru goes on more and more missions alone; Suguru stays silent, sacrificing himself, in a way, rather than open up to (and thus drag down) those closest to him.

Deer Country Attributes

• Canon Powers: As I am planning for Suguru to keep his canon abilities as opposed to gaining new ones via his bloodtype:
  • Martial Arts - He's a well-rounded fighter, familiar with various weapons + hand-to-hand combat.
  • Tactical Thinker - It's genuinely difficult to catch Suguru off-guard, or to throw so much at him that he can't find some way out of it. He's just good at sizing up his opponents? Plus he knows the value in subverting expectations, ie tricking someone into thinking he's a long-distance fighter when he's quite comfortable with close combat.
  • Cursed Energy - What makes a sorcerer a Sorcerer, tbh! It's what allows Suguru to exorcise curses/fight other sorcerers, and Suguru is known to have an immense amount of it. He can also cast a curtain, which is a barrier that sort of, like, hides whatever is inside from non-sorcerers? Some can even keep other sorcerers out, but that depends on their skill level v Suguru's.
  • Cursed Spirit Manipulation - Suguru has the ability to literally ingest curses? He shrinks 'em into orbs, swallows 'em whole, and is then able to summon/direct them at will. Not going to lie, gang: it's gross. Some of the curses he can summon include:
    • Caterpillar Cow - It's cute(-ish) and it can carry things and/or people.
    • Manta Ray - It's also cute(-ish), and can also carry things and/or people—while flying! Like a magic carpet...
    • Flyheads - They're just extremely weak curses Suguru uses as surveillance, aka if he sends them out and they die, something dangerous is afoot!
    • Storage Caterpillar - It's a nasty little caterpillar that a) calls Suguru "Mom" (i told u it's nasty) and b) can eat weapons, etc, then regurgitate them at Suguru's command.
    • Dragon - It's big, it looks cool, it can smash into things and deal some serious damage.
    • Worm - He has so many worm-y curses, I'm crying. Anyway: This curse is also big, and it eats opponents. I guess it can actually digest unimportant things, but Suguru can also command it to just, you know. Hold them in its stomach for a while. Worm jail.

• Blood Type: Paleblood
• Omen: A small, black bird!
• Blessed Day: 10/31 - Years down the line, this will be the date that Satoru Gojo is sealed away thanks to a villain using Suguru's body/voice to lure him into a trap. Obviously neither Suguru nor Satoru will be aware of this, but! It's a fun (and sad) little detail... :')
• Patron Pthumerian: Cloverfield
• Blood Power Manifestation: I think it might be fun for Suguru, being as empathetic as he is, to occasionally pop into the dreams of people he's closest to/cares for? He'll have no real control over this ability, and there's no telling how long his dream invasions will last... but it could be a way for him to address unspoken issues, or possibly present him with a way to actually address difficult topics.
